We’ve long known that pets are beneficial for lowering blood pressure and relieving stress, but now we have some evidence that they make us better people too!
A study published in the journal Applied Developmental Science, finds that human-animal relationships may contribute to the positive development of young people. Researchers at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University studied the effects of the human-animal relationship among 567 young people involved the 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development.
Participants were between 18 and 26 years of age and completed a questionnaire that asked questions about their interactions with and emotions about their animals related to attachment, commitment, and moral issues. Researchers found that caring for an animal increased empathy, leadership, and social engagement. Participants in the 4-H group were also more likely to help their friends and family and showed more confidence and community activism.
